Alieu Jabateh 's Quest To See His Mother Alive Faded

Posted on March 22, 2009

Every child must love his or her mother. Alieu Jabeteh, FELMAUSA Website technician, was one of them. Sadly, his mother Hadja Mafatumata Jabateh passed away Sunday while he was in flight to Liberia see his her.

He had not seen his mother for years. He communicated with her via phone, but a final call from her crying to see him struck Alieu. Immediately he planned his visit to Liberia to his mother, who was reported ill.

"She misses me a lot," Alieu told me just before he departed his resident in Sharon Hill, Darby, Pennsylvania on Saturday, March 21, 2009. He was departing for the Newark Airport where he would fly to Liberia.

Driven to the airport by close friend, Dr. Abu Mansallay, Alieu, joined by his wife Geraline departed for the airport as I bid him safe journey and wished his mother speedy recovery.

He was going to Liberia to spend sometime with his mom. But while in flight, news from Liberia Sunday morning was not encouraging. She had passed away, not having the chance to see her son and have that final chat.

When the news of Alieu's mother death broke out, many in the community were overwhelmed by emotions, considering the mother and child relationship and the manner in which Alieu left the shores of the United States just to at least be by his mother's side.

"When I get to Liberia, she would be fine. I know she missed me," Alieu told me. He was not certain his mother's illness was serious, though he had been told she was not responding to treatment. He purchased gifts for her as well.
